Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licensed electrician in New Zealand?

Yes. Prescribed electrical work must be carried out by a registered electrical worker who holds a current practising licence from the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB). DIY electrical work is restricted and can create serious safety and compliance risks. GoFox electricians are appropriately registered and licensed to carry out the electrical work they undertake.

How do I find a reliable electrician near me?

Look for an electrician who is EWRB-registered and holds a current practising licence. GoFox Electrical provides trusted, professional electrical services through locally owned and operated franchises

How do I know if my home's switchboard needs upgrading?

Common signs include frequently tripping breakers, old ceramic fuses instead of modern RCD-protected circuits, lights that flicker when appliances switch on, or a board that is more than 25 years old. An outdated switchboard may not meet current NZ safety standards and can struggle to handle modern loads like heat pumps, EV chargers, and home offices. A licensed electrician can assess your board and advise on the right upgrade.

Can an electrician come out after hours or on weekends?

Yes. GoFox electricians offering after-hours services can assist with urgent electrical issues outside normal business hours, including evenings and weekends. After-hours rates are typically higher than standard rates, so it’s worth confirming pricing when you call.

Do you install EV chargers for homes and businesses?

Yes. We install EV chargers for residential and commercial properties, with solutions to suit different vehicles, properties and charging needs. We’ll assess your existing electrical setup, recommend a suitable charger and ensure it is installed safely and correctly.

Do you install solar power systems?

Yes. We install solar power systems designed around your home, energy use and future needs. We can help with everything from solar panels and inverters through to battery storage and smart energy management, with a solution tailored to your property.

What type of heat pump is best for my home?

The best heat pump system will depend on the size and layout of your home, the number of rooms you want to heat and cool, available installation space and your budget. Options include high-wall, floor-mounted, multi-split and ducted heat pump systems. We can assess your home and recommend a solution suited to your heating and cooling needs.

Do you offer heat pump servicing and maintenance?

Yes. We service and maintain heat pumps to help keep them operating efficiently and reliably. Regular maintenance can help maintain airflow and performance, while professional servicing can identify wear or developing faults before they become bigger problems.

How much does an electrician cost?

Electrician costs vary depending on the type of work, location and complexity of the job. Most electricians charge an hourly rate and may also have a callout or service fee, with travel charges sometimes applying outside their usual service area. Larger or more complex jobs, such as switchboard upgrades or rewiring, may be quoted at a fixed price. Getting a written quote before work begins is recommended so you know what to expect.
