GoFox Solar Solutions
Designed Around Your Energy Needs

New Zealand has excellent solar conditions, with many parts of the country receiving enough sunlight to make solar a highly effective source of electricity. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sun. This means a well-designed system can produce useful power year-round, across most of the country.

GoFox installs solar power systems for properties throughout New Zealand. Whether you are looking to reduce your reliance on the grid, help reduce your exposure to future electricity price increases, improve your energy independence, or complement an existing EV charger installation, your local GoFox electrician will assess your property and recommend a system suited to your energy needs.

Solar is a significant investment, so getting the design right from the outset is important. Selecting the appropriate system size, panel configuration, inverter and battery options, while accounting for roof orientation, all play a significant role in long-term performance. GoFox manages the process from assessment and system design through to any required approvals, installation and commissioning, with your local franchise acting as your single point of contact from the initial consultation through to completion.

Understanding Your Solar System Options

There are three main types of solar power systems commonly used in New Zealand. The right option for your property will depend on your electricity use, location, budget and what you want the system to achieve. Your local GoFox electrician will explain the options and recommend a system suited to your situation.

Grid-Tied Solar

A grid-tied system connects your solar panels to your property’s electrical system and the local electricity network through an inverter.

Your property uses the solar electricity as it is generated, with any additional power required drawn from the grid. Surplus solar electricity can be exported to the network, with participating electricity retailers paying or crediting you at their applicable solar buyback rate.

Grid-tied solar is typically the simplest and most cost-effective starting point. However, a standard grid-tied system will not continue supplying your property during a power outage. For safety reasons, the inverter automatically shuts down when the network supply is unavailable.

Your local GoFox team can help determine whether a grid-tied solar system is the right solution for your property.

Hybrid Solar
with Battery Storage

A hybrid system combines solar panels and a compatible inverter with battery storage. Surplus solar electricity can be stored in the battery and used later, such as overnight or during periods when solar generation is lower.

A properly designed hybrid system may also provide backup power during an outage. This requires compatible backup equipment and an appropriate system configuration, and backup may be limited to selected essential circuits rather than the entire property.

Battery storage increases the upfront cost of a solar system but can improve energy self-sufficiency and increase the amount of solar electricity used within the property. Whether a battery is worthwhile will depend on your electricity-use patterns, priorities and budget.

Your local GoFox team can discuss the available options and recommend a system suited to your needs.

Off-Grid Solar

Off-grid systems are designed for properties that are not connected to the electricity network, typically in rural or remote locations where establishing a grid connection may be impractical or uneconomical. These systems combine solar panels with substantial battery storage and may also include a backup generator.

Careful system design is particularly important for an off-grid property because there is no electricity network to fall back on when solar generation is low or demand is high. The system must be designed around the property’s expected electricity use, seasonal conditions and required level of backup.

If you are building or buying in a remote location, talk to your local GoFox franchise about the property, your expected electricity requirements and what an off-grid system may involve.

How a Solar Power System Works

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, capture energy from daylight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. That electricity is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity that your home or business uses to power lighting, appliances and other electrical equipment.

Your property will always use the solar electricity being generated first. If your solar system isn’t producing enough electricity to meet demand, additional power is automatically drawn from the electricity network. If your system generates more electricity than you’re using, the surplus can be exported to the network, with many electricity retailers offering a buyback rate for eligible exported energy.

If your system includes battery storage, excess solar electricity can be stored for use later, such as during the evening, overnight or during periods of high electricity demand. In a hybrid system, the inverter intelligently manages the flow of electricity between the solar panels, battery, your property and the electricity network.

The amount of electricity your system generates will depend on several factors, including the size of the system, roof orientation, shading and the amount of daylight your property receives. Your local GoFox electrician will assess these factors and design a solar power system tailored to your property’s energy requirements.

GoFox Solar Services FAQs

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?
Most homes in New Zealand can accommodate solar panels, but factors such as roof orientation, pitch, shading, available space and roof condition all influence how effective a system will be. A site assessment by a qualified electrician who specialises in solar can determine whether your home is suitable and recommend the right system for your energy needs.
